Local leader says Vatterott fired him for letting homeless student sleep in library

Brian Carroll, the campus president for Vatterott College in Kansas City, is out in the cold because he helped a homeless student stay out of sub-zero temperatures on Friday, Jan. 6, WDAF reports.

Carroll, who has been leading the local campus for five years, says he allowed a student who has schizophrenic and didn’t have shelter to stay overnight in the school’s library. According to WDAF, the student had been sleeping in a wooded area near campus.

Silpada sues former employees, local jewelry store over $300,000 theft

Silpada Designs Inc. contends that three of its former employees and an area jewelry store with four locations stole $300,000 worth of merchandise.

According to The Kansas City Star, Silpada filed a lawsuit last week that claims nearly 23,000 Silpada-labeled boxes, jewelry and materials were taken under “the cover of darkness.”

The accused people told the Star that it’s not theft at all, but instead simple confusion as the Lenexa-based sterling silver jewelry retailer shut down.

Schwab family settlement involves lifetime payments

According to The Kansas City Star, transcripts from a Wednesday hearing revealed a few details of the wrongful death settlement that Caleb Schwab’s family reached with the owners of Schlitterbahn Waterpark and raft manufacturer Zebec of North America.

Schwab died in August at age 10 while riding the Verruckt water slide in Kansas City, Kan., which Schlitterbahn promoted as the world’s tallest water slide. He was the son of Kansas state Rep. Scott Schwab, R-Olathe.

Commission rejects new plan for old Leawood Country Club property

Developers Saul Ellis and Mark Simpson are trying to win approval for a new plan for the former Leawood Country Club property near 89th Street and Lee Boulevard.

Last week, the Leawood Planning Commission delivered a stinging rebuke to Leawood Country Club Partners LLC who first acquired the land for $1.75 million 14 years ago, The Kansas City Star reports.

The new proposal replaces a plan approved in 2004 that promised a public clubhouse, pool, and tennis courts and 23 single-family homes.
