Pilots say American Airlines leaves passengers behind to meet departure goals

Fort Worth-based American Airlines is leaving tens of thousands of standby passengers at the gate to make sure its flights take off on time, according to figures from the Allied Pilots Association.

Nearly 20,000 passengers were blocked from boarding in February even though there were empty seats, Dan Carey, president of the Allied Pilots Association, said in a letter to U.S. pilots on Thursday.

U.S. indicts businessman reportedly tied to Seaboard for supporting Hezbollah

U.S. prosecutors have brought charges against a Lebanese businessman whose ties to Merriam-based Seaboard Corp. also are being looked at.

Kassim Tajideen was indicted Friday on allegations that he helped fund Hezbollah, a Shiite militia group designated by the U.S. as a terror group, The Wall Street Journal reports. U.S. authorities say Tajideen has engaged in money laundering and conspiring to launder money.

Tajideen’s lawyer denied the allegations against his client.

KC urban aquaponics project hooks business support

A Kansas City project to raise fish and vegetables in an urban food desert is netting support from area businesses.

Nile Valley Aquaponics celebrated its grand opening on Friday. The project, at 29th Street and Wabash Avenue in Kansas City, is designed as a self-sustaining system in which tilapia are raised in tanks, with waste in the water used to fertilize vegetables. Products would be sold locally and the project would add jobs in the inner city.

MoneyGram agrees to confidential talks about Euronet purchase offer

Euronet Worldwide Inc. hasn’t swept MoneyGram off its feet, yet — but the Leawood company has moved a step closer.

Dallas-based MoneyGram International Inc. said Sunday that it has entered into a confidentiality agreement with Euronet. The agreement will let MoneyGram take a deeper look at whether Euronet’s acquisition offer is better than one previously offered by Ant Financial Services Group.

KC elementary school set to become home for seniors

The old Sanford B. Ladd School on Kansas City’s East Side is slated to become a senior center.

Kansas City Public Schools has a contract to sell the school, at 3640 Benton Blvd., to an affiliate of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church, The Kansas City Star reports. No sale figure was disclosed, and the transaction isn’t expected to close until next year.
