'Rent-A-Vet' scheme brings indictments for $13.8M fraud

A federal grand jury returned an eight-count indictment against Jeffrey Wilson, Paul Salavitch and Patriot Co. Inc. in an alleged “Rent-A-Vet” scheme that defrauded the government of $13.8 million.

Wilson, 51, of Loch Lloyd in Belton, owns The Wilson Group Inc. general contracting company in Greenwood. Lawing Financial nabs wealth advisory services leader from competitor

Overland Park-based Lawing Financial persuaded Chris Osmond to leave BMO Private Bank and become the company’s new director of wealth advisory services.

Osmond has 13 years of experience, including 11 in direct wealth management. He spent the past two years as director of investments and senior portfolio manager for BMO Private Bank in Kansas City. Before that, he worked in Denver at U.S. Bank, Northern Trust and Oppenheimer Funds.

Prices Rose 7.1% Year-Over-Year [INFOGRAPHIC]

What’s Your Home Worth?

Some Highlights:

  • CoreLogic’s latest Home Price Index shows that prices rose by 7.1% across the United States year-over-year.
  • With mortgage interest rates rising in the short term, CoreLogic believes price appreciation will slow to 4.7% by this time next year.
  • 49 out of 50 states, and the District of Columbia, all had positive appreciation over the last 12 months, with the only exception being the state of Connecticut, which experienced a -0.5% appreciation.

Column: Why is it so hard for women to admit we need help at home?

Saturdays at home were always for yard work. Sundays, aching from the odd muscles pushed to exhaustion from raking and bagging leaves, meant cleaning inside. That doesn’t make for much of a weekend, and by Monday, I often felt more exhausted than when I left work the Friday before.

All this, and the bottom of my white socks still turned the color of that crayon no one likes as I walked around on our hardwood floors. The kitchen counters never sparkled. Dog hair mocked me at every turn.
